Another good point Scott....troubleshooting is a necessary step. Let me be a bit more open. If you are running a "one-man-band" operation like myself, in order to have the slightest bit of sanity, I MUST have some assurance that if I am not in the local area, all hell will not break loose.
So...I have my IPCheck software set up at my NOC to email/text message me when a unit becomes unresponsive for longer than 5 minutes. I have my auto-rebooters set to REBOOT if non-responsive for 15 minutes. So...that gives me 10 minutes to troubleshoot or PAUSE the reboot process. If I happen to be in San Francisco enjoying a night out on the town, and receive a TEXT MESSAGE stating "Repeater 1 is DOWN", I wait for a follow-up email stating "Repeater 1 is UP". If response email comes sooner than 15 minutes, then the unit came up on its own. Upon reaching "ACTION THRESHOLD" (15 minutes), the reboot process occurs (also generating a TEXT MESSAGE). A few minutes later, I better receive an UP message. If not, then I have to either respond or call my sub-con technician. Its $375 for a single outlet device, pager service is $9 per month. As far as auto-re-boot. I personally don't like systems auto hard booting. No that with AirBridge units, this may be prefered and necessary ;). But I hate auto cycling Trango's and Cisco units. They are too solid to go down without some reason being there and I prefer some fact finding before that solution is used. But to each his own.. (We do page our tech's though with a ping at the device at the NOC.. do it for any time a device has a packet loss increase for more than 15 minutes...
