When a cross over cable runs $2.50 then I almost see no need to make one yourself unless you just happen to not have one with you.

That do not include any cable or plugs nor tools... I use to do patch cables a lot myself to but when you can have patch cables for a couple of dollars then to me it makes no sense in making them yourself any longer. But say if your out of patch cables in your install van then by all means make the patch cable then and there because it would be silly to drive back to your office to pickup a ~$3 piece of cable when you can make the same cable in ~5min..
