Sorry for the late reply but after some testing it seems that my disks do
report 4k sectors to SmartOS. I've successfully verified (with zdb | grep
ashift) that the zones pool uses 4k block sizes. Thanks everyone for your
help.

Hi,
I know that SmartOS does not officially support 4k drives (ashift=12).
I am a little late to the party on this thread, but wanted to respond because I
spent quite a bit of time on this topic when I first started using SmartOS a
few years ago. SmartOS does support 4k drives, but you just have to be a
little more aware of block size with creating virtual disks in a KVM instance.
When you create kvm instances, you will need to set your virtual disk block
size to "block_size": 32768. The default block size doesn't work for 4k
drives.
You won't see any problems what so ever with regular zones.
I wish I still had the reference where I found this information, but I've lost
it. If you look back through the mailing list archives, you will see where I
talked at length about this topic.
