Many wifi USB devices are not supported by illumos. You should verify it's USB 
vendor and device id with prtconf. It may also be that smartos is simply 
lacking the driver.  I think Joyent may have stripped the wifi drivers from 
smartos but I'm not sure. 

I'd actually suggest trying homerun networking if Ethernet isn't an option. 
I've had good luck with that in my home although  it's lower bandwidth.  It 
still is more than I get upstream though to the Internet.
