It affects anyone who use the USB image provided on smartos.org 
<http://smartos.org/> and a ‘out of the box’(as in no bios settings change X9 
board), if it’s the kernel, or the boot loader, or whatever else is just 
semantics. But the end result is the same if someone buys that system, 
downloads the usbimage, follows the documentation, they’re in a world of hurt 
with crazy symptoms that and no documentation other then a issue on github 
somewhere. And yes I know the workaround works, I’ve been through the procedure 
and doubted my sanity for a week in the meantime.

It’s all good and fine that it works on SDC, most people I’d imagine however 
use the SmartOS images and when following the suggestion blindly might end up 
getting a pretty horrible experience. When Understand the comments on the issue 
correctly, a patch exists since June 2012
