Interactively would be OK, I think, and I expect we'll do that at some
point. Chose not to do so for scripted invocations of svccfg earlier in S11
due to not wanting to break scripts.

Sure... but isn't a script that sets a value that's not allowed by the
template broken? Breaking broken scripts doesn't bother me at all...
I suppose a non-broken script might delete a required value and then
recreate it.
How about property-level and instance-level validation at refresh time?
(In particular, before that part of refresh that commits the current snapshot.)
