For the logger. Look at the SLF4j and SimplerLogger class. If you
You are using your own logger then the best way might be just to add
another interface to SLF4j and use the SimplerLogger as a template.

I dug up a couple of notes.
The 172 170 156 160 models, and maybe others, are specified to use
500mA @ 5V at PEAK output in 3G modes. There heat dissipation is
related to this out course and the hotter they are the less efficient
they are. In other words don't stack them one on top of another if
possible.

If you want to try to minimize power usage you can use the commands
above to force the modem to stay in GPRS mode, which is usually the
most efficient. You will also want to look at the RSSI or S/N ratio
and see your reception. If you have a low RSSI (10 maybe) or a low
Signal / Noise ratio then the modem has to compensate using more
power. Get the best signal you can by moving the modems. This is
especially true if the modems are inside of a computer cabinet. Most
of those act as RF shielding. Again don't stack them one on top of
the other as this will increase noise and the shielding on one modem
can actually act as interference for the next modem if close enough.
