OK - I think the crucial point that you are mussing is that the _only_ video output port on the new MacBook and MacBook Pro is a Mini DisplayPort. If you connect a VGA or DVI monitor to this port via a suitable adapter it will work for most things, but because these older monitors don't have HDCP then your Mac will refuse to play any DRM content.
