Jonathan,

I've got an external WD drive which for a time refused to mount
although visible by the system profiler. There is a long history of
this issue with WD drives which you can follow on Apple's Support
Dsicussion forums. The general advice is to disconnect everything bar
keyboard and mouse, start up your iMac and when in your user account
attach the WD drive to the iMac. This seems to work - at least it did
for me. I had to do this about a dozen times before it seems to have
stuck - and stays persistently mounted.

As far as I can research the problem stems from the WD firmware that
auto-shuts down the drive after a period of inactivity. I've not tried
to update the firmware although I think there is a more recent version
for my drive.
