Apologies for the delay in responding. Once the 'hang-up' occurs, the HD volume doesn't appear in the Disk Utility list to enable me to run anything on it.
I managed to get it booted-up again today but as soon as I opened a new finder window the old beachball reappeared… Thanks for all suggestions. Also from the install disc you can backup your entire harddisk from disk utility to save _Everything_ (incase you missed some files due to stress to get the machine up and running again). Could just be some other thing than the hdd - but boot into the install disc (preferably original one) and you'll be able to save most things from there.
