That's not a bad idea although I am reluctant to spend any money on my
faithful PowerBook as I must, at some stage, buy something more up to
date. My idea was just to give this old warhorse a spring-clean so
that I was not cluttered up with loads of useless stuff I never use.
It's almost a way of sorting out my filing cabinet. I just wanted to
reassure myself that I wasn't going to end up in some black hole with
no up to date OS.

Hi Martin
Would the better solution would be to put a 320gb 2.5" IDE drive
into the PowerBook, then you won't have to worry about storage
space? It's unlikely that erasing the current drive will give a
substantial performance increase as the PowerPC processor is
comparatively very slow these days.

On my PowerBook G4, I am running OS 10.5.8. Having finally found my
external hard drive (after a house move about eight months ago), I
am currently making a back-up with Time Machine. I would like to
erase my hard disk and do a fresh install with OS X. It's such a
long time ago that I can't remember whether I have the right OS
disk. I have found a disk which says:
Mac OS X Leopard
CPU Drop-in DVD
Version 10.5
2Z691-6040-A
My question is whether this is the right disk to install the
software on my laptop? If it is 10.5, I assume that I can upgrade
to 10.5.8 by using software update. Then I can have a close look at
the contents of my external drive and decide what I want to
reinstall. My hard drive on the PowerBook is really quite full and
I would like the opportunity to "start again".
Any advice, as always, will be gratefully received.
