John Gruber usually says running permissions repair is pointless unless you've 
just installed stuff. 

My experience is that defragging the OS causes problems. 

I would say run Diskwarrior monthly and nothing else. 

As for slow machines, Restart and look in activity monitor for clues. Exceeding 
RAM heavily or having overfull hard drive usually the culprit. Minimum 10% 
free, better 25%
