If british is ticked and greyed out, that means it's the only one ticked and 
thus can't be unticked (you need to have at least one input method selected).

When you push shift + 3 does it give the £ or $ sign? If it gives £ despite 
having $ printed on it, then it's using a british keyboard layout.

If you want to swap the 3 key to one that's got £ rather than $ printed on it, 
you might be able to find a set of keyboard keys on ebay.
