When I two finger tap (right click) on the Trash, I have 'Empty Trash'.
I have to do a Command + two finger tap to get 'Secure Empty Trash'.
Go to finder preferences->advanced and uncheck the option to empty trash
securely.

lots of zeros over everything it empties, and repeats this several
times over.
If you just want to trash stuff, do an ordinary empty.
Doing a secure erase won't stop the police reconstituting your erased
files, as Ray, their uneraser in chief, will tell you!
