Depends how many Excel features the spreadsheets use.  I don't think
Numbers can do pivot tables for example.  There are a variety of
compatibility issues, for examples fonts and formatting don't always carry
over properly.

Having said that, I use Pages almost exclusively on my home and mobile
computers without difficulty.  For the spreadsheet unresolvable issues I
use open office (infrequently).

Keynote is way superior to Powerpoint.

So yes, I'd get iWork and if you get a file you are struggling with, ask
the sender to reformat it :)
