I went to the Apple store in Brighton and spoke to someone at the genius bar. He told me what to do - reinstal Elements, untick a box telling it to share files with iPhoto etc. I reinstalled, checked preferences and didn't find a suitable box but it all seems to be working fine this time... So I'll just hope it keeps on working OK!!
He also said to keep photostream off for 30 days as all of the unwanted files will still be there for that long. So - temporarily, no photostream. Thanks for your help!
