An app won't use power unless it's running, although downloading an app which 
then leaves you with very little space on your iPhone might cause iOS to work a 
bit harder and so drain the battery more quickly.

Have you changed any settings recently? Automatic app, music and video 
downloads in iOS6? iTunes playing in the background at low volume? Mail 
checking frequency?

Wild guessing here ...!
