For what it's worth Virginia, my iPad Air had no trouble joining our home network running on a Netgear DG384 router (dating from about 2004 or so!) connected to Airport Extreme (2012 model). We have WPA2 personal security and a restricted MAC address access list too so I'm sure you will be able to get connected ...
