My Belated Attempt at fixing Open Office

When I boot the Mac in safe mode the issue repeats (i.e. Open Office shows the
same error message "Do you want to re-open the window" etc. and this itself
message freezes whichever of the 2 options I choose, and I have to Force Quit
Open Office)
The issue doesn't appear when I open Open Office in my wife's user account. A
message about updating java appears there, but my wife's account is running
very very slowly at the moment, so I don't try to update java from there. A
Time Machine backup is currently running very slowly after I did the safe mode
operation you recommended.

I haven't tried LibreOffice yet - there's too much going on inside the mac at
present!

Does all this suggest that it's a java problem, despite updating it?
