I use Doxie One as my scanner and it seems fine for me. One a few colour photos 
I had odd moiré patterns, but almost all of them were just fine.

A cheap alternative is to take photos of them with your digital camera which is 
surprisingly effective. I did that with an old family album where I didn't want 
to remove the pictures as they were glued in place.
