Actually, looking again the VM folder is showing as a volume not a folder, so would have been mistakenly created in /volumes for some reason. Probably just an upgrade quirk or during the conversion to the new file system

Upper case VM (proper hidden file) seems to be created today (2 screenshots). Lower case vm (in the wrong place) is yesterday evening after I had reinstalled.
