LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - They're not rude, antisocial, alcoholics all
bickering and desperately trying to hook up with each other. They're just
drawn that way.
Comedy Central has given a greenlight to what the network describes as
"television's first animated reality series." Launching in October of 2004,
"Drawn Together" will answer the question of what happens when eight
completely different cartoon characters from various genres and styles live
together and have their lives filmed for the entire world to see. That's
what Comedy Central is promising.
"While very much a character driven comedy with a tendency toward
melodramatic outbursts, some of the humor in 'Drawn Together' will come from
the viewers' familiarity with reality television and the show's ability to
poke holes in the well-known conventions found in these shows,"
says Lauren Corrao, the cable network's development head. "What makes the
series so compelling is the use of familiar animated icons to inhabit the
roles of the housemates and the opportunity to watch these familiar
characters from different worlds interact together as they attempt to get
along under one roof."
The series, from Matt Silverstein and Dave Jeser ("Greg the Bunny"), has
been given an eight episode order. Each episode will capture the
"unscripted" and "real" antics of a group of mismatched animated characters.
There's "Ling-Ling," an adorable Asian trading card character, "Captain
Hero," a Saturday morning cartoon protagonist, "Spanky Ham," a foul-mouthed
internet download pig and five other characters that will have viewers
saying, "Hey, that looks a lot like ... ."
Silverstein and Jeser, who also worked on Comedy Central's "The Man Show,"
wrote the script and will executive produce. Jordan Young ("The Simpsons")
assisted in the creation of the characters.
