Ga. hip-hopper arrested on drug charges

MACON, Ga. -- Sonny Spoon, a hip-hop artist popular in the Southeast, has been was arrested on drug charges, Macon, Ga., police said. Spoon, whose real name is James E. Maxwell Jr., was stopped Saturday on a seat-belt violation, said Melanie Hofmann, Macon police spokeswoman. He consented to a search of his 1985 Suburban and police allegedly found illegal drugs with a street value of about $6,600, according to Hofmann. Maxwell, 30, was charged with felony possession of marijuana, possession with intent to distribute ecstacy, trafficking in cocaine and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, the Macon Telegraph reported. Sister Syphre, a local promoter, told the Telegraph that Maxwell is the most successful Macon-area rap artist and is heard throughout the Southeast and on popular mix albums in the Atlanta area. He is the CEO of Dollywood Records in Macon.
