It's usually because the AOL program
defaults to the bottom and most people who use it don't want to scroll back to
the top. The top vs bottom posting is like a real war between old style
bbs/newsgroup posters, and today's email list users. It used to be
"proper" to post at the bottom, so you could read all the old messages before
the reply.
I personally find top posting more efficient
because I don't have to scroll. If I can't remember what it is about i can
always scroll down to look, but usually I can keep up with what is going
on.
