Gore to Endorse Dean  "Why not-after all Dean is a Gore Clone with lies, hiding the facts and kissing everyone'sarse."

Monday, December 08, 2003

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Former Vice President Al Gore (search) plans to back Democratic presidential front-runner Howard Dean (search), Fox News has confirmed Monday.

Gore, the Democratic candidate defeated by President Bush in 2000, will make an announcement with Dean on Tuesday in the Harlem section of New York City.

The two then plan to head to Iowa, sight of the first-in-the-nation Jan. 19 caucuses, a Democratic source close to Gore said.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Dean will return from Iowa in time for the Tuesday night Democratic debate in New Hampshire.

Dean's campaign declined to comment.

The move is a further blow to the campaign of Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman (search), who was Gore's vice presidential running mate when the two won the popular vote. The race ended after the Supreme Court ruled that Florida, which suffered a number of voting irregularities, could not continue to recount its ballots, after 36 days of trying. The electoral votes (search) for the state then went to Bush, pushing him over the 271-vote threshold. Gore conceded to Bush on Dec. 13, 2000.

Dean has been surging in the polls of late, taking back the lead in Iowa from Missouri Rep. Dick Gephardt, who has slowed down his advertising in the state, in part because Gephardt has agreed to abide by the spending limits that accompany the use of federal matching funds, aides close to Gephardt say.

Dean is also leading in New Hampshire, where he and Gore will travel Tuesday to attend the Tuesday night Democratic debate.
