African American History Museum Ground Breaking

Dec 3, 2002 6:00 pm US/Eastern
Politicians and community leaders break ground on Baltimore's newest museum, the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture. A large white tent was set up Tuesday at the museum's future home, the corner of President and Pratt Streets. The $33 million, five story museum will chronicle the 350 year history of African Americans in Maryland. The museum is being named for Lewis, a successful African American businessman who died at age 50 in 1993. He graduated from Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Virginia State and Harvard Law School and then went on to become chair and chief executive officer of TLC Beatrice International. The Lewis museum should be finished in two years.
