Was there a real person known as Typhoid Mary?

Mary Mallon, known as "Typhoid Mary," was blamed for spreading typhoid to at least 1,300 people in New York City in 1903 alone. Despite her illness, Miss Mallon refused to stop working and often obtained jobs (under assumed names) that involved the handling of food. To prevent further contamination of the populace, Mary was placed in permanent detention in 1915 and remained there until her death in 1938.
