Is Butter or Margarine Better?

In commercials and supermarkets across the country, butter and margarine face off in an effort to win consumers. But which is healthier for South Beach Dieters?

Butter and margarine differ mainly in the kinds of fat they contain. Butter, made from animal fats, is high in the bad, saturated fats not recommended for the South Beach Diet. Margarine, made with vegetable oil, contains less saturated fat (mainly polyunsaturated fat) and often has high amounts of trans fats.

While it's okay to replace butter with margarine, you want to try to avoid those types made with trans fats. Instead, look for margarine made with olive oil or those labeled "trans fat free." Some good choices include Fleischman's Premium Olive Oil Blend, Smart Balance, or Brummel & Brown. Also, choose margarine spreads that come in a tub instead of a stick, as they contain less saturated fat.

One last piece of advice: Use margarine in moderation. Both butter and margarine are still very high-fat foods to be eaten with care.
