Fed-up friend can't get a word in
edgewise
DEAR HARRIETTE: I have a friend who can be very sweet to me, but in order to have a relationship with her I have to endure long soliloquies whenever we try to have a conversation. She doesn't seem to know how to talk back and forth and share ideas. She gets on a roll and talks until she gets tired or we're forced to do something different. I've gotten to the point where I don't want to spend time with her. How can I handle this situation? -- Carla, Atlanta

Most people get a fair amount of fun out of their lives, but on balance life is suffering, and only the very young or very foolish imagine otherwise. - George Orwell
