How, you might ask, does one make them? A friend uses a simple method: Finish the wing. Soak a suitable sized thin balsa sheet (or rather two pieces) in hot water till very soft (or leave in water - submerged - overnight). Tape it to the part of the leading edge where you want your fixed slat and let to dry - a few days if the climate is cool :-)! Now you have a perfectly curved piece of balsa sheet. Just add small balsa supports, that you in this case can stick into the EPP leading edge and glue into place. The ideal width of a slat is often discussed, as is the ideal placement, but his are about 10% of the chord wide and seems to be aligned with the leading edge or slightly below. To toughen the balsa you varnish them and cover them with your favourite covering - paper is one good material, if applied with the varnish, as it strengthens the balsa a lot. Some small RC heicopters have their rotor blades made that way! Suffice to say the slats on my friend's aircraft seem to make them very easy to handle at very low speeds and slats are known to be good against spins! To apply them to flying wings is probably a bit of an unchartered territory. Kaiser flaps are maybe easier, but need a servo, or two!
