Immediately after launch the HLG's speed bleeds off exceptionally quickly.
Thus, you either convert the launch energy into altitude RIGHT NOW or it's
gone. To maximize the conversion, straight up is what you try for.

The most efficient throw for most is either straight ahead or even slightly
down (grunting is optional). To get the plane going up after a near flat
throw most use a launch mode of some kind on a spring loaded switch. But,
those who aren't vertically challenged and launch with their thumb on the
transmitter stick simply use their thumb.

Essentially, you want the plane to:
-Leave your hand at the highest possible speed,
 -Travel straight up,
-Rotate to horizontal at either Min Sink or Max L/D speed
  depending on your preference.
