It is winter time. Swap show time, in a city that knows how to keep
it's airspeed.
Early in February I went to the Lancaster RC Club's swap shop, and
there on the sale table was a sexy metallic blue sloper, about a 50" span,
of built up balsa and spruce construction. She had a slim wing, a wide flat
fuse, a full flying stab and curves in all the right places. She was short
coupled, with a lot of elevator and small ailerons. I knew she would be a
handfull to fly.
The guy who had the sloper had bought her partially built, covered
her with monokote, and added twin tails, because it looked right. He didn't
have any plans, he didn't know where the CG went, and he didn't care. Under
close questioning he admitted that he had put a rx, a battery and a couple
of servos into her, and had tossed her once lightly, over soft grass. And
then he took the equipment out again.
So here she was a t the swap shop.
I looked at her long and hard, but I knew she'd be a heartbreaker.
I bought a Bob Martin sloper instead, letting it get it's Talon into me.
My buddy Schreiver showed up at the Westerville show today, with the
sleek little blue sloper in tow. I figured he'd bought her back in
February, when I passed on the deal. Nope. Schreiver tells me another guy
had taken her home with him, and put servos and rx and battery in her.
This other guy had even flown her once, and she had a little scar on her
windshield to prove it. Then this other guy had pulled the equipment out
and swapped the sexy little blue sloper to Schreiver.
Schreiver had done his homework. He'd gotten on the internet and
searched under the terms "sloper" and "Wowsa!" He'd found out she was
called a Tommy Cat. That was all he knew about her.
And now Schreiver had her at the Westerville show, all prettied up.
I figured he would enter her in the beauty contest. Wrong again, Nagel. He
was gonna sell her.
Well, the Tommy Cat sure brought a lot of business to the club's
swap shop table. And sure enough, late in the morning, some fellow plunked
down his greenbacks and waltzed off with her under his arm.
Five boyfriends in one month. Somehow, I think the Tommy Cat will
be back again.
Well,
