Square or circular joiners I don't see a difference except that round rods are probably easier to find.
Carbon or steel Carbon is lighter and more expensive Steel bends before it breaks (I think this is safer) Carbon just breaks floating or fixed rods a fixed rod ties the wings to the fuselage through the joiner rod. This stresses the joiner rod even further becauset it has to carry te weight of the fuselage as well as the load imposed by the in flight load. A floating rod has two other pins that connect the fuselage to the wing that will carry the weight of the fuselage thus allowing the joiner rod to only have the inflight loads to worry about.
