The photo in the link provided indicates that the servos were 5125 digitals.
125's may or may not have done this, but it is likely that the servos were
stalled at one end of travel or the other and that is why they smoked.  I
would think the digitals are more likely to exhibit this behavior if the
receiver is switched on before the transmitter.

analog servo, not a digital.

This is NOT surprising.  The servos were stalled.  Digitals are very
powerful and precise, and don't tolerate being stalled.

NEVER turn the receiver on FIRST!  Always the transmitter FIRST!

I noticed that a JR 649 PCM was rock solid without a transmitter signal, but
would push the servos to their stops depending on where the servo was at
power-on.  I noticed a Hitec Electon 6 jitters like CRAZY until the first
transmitter pulse is received.

If you ever fly electrics, you QUICKLY learn to turn on the transmitter
first, or you learn to live without fingers!
