To: Walter Bender<walter.ben...@gmail.com>
Hello Mr Bender
Im able to see the USB device that is connected but I'm failing to
open It, I went to settings of virtualbox, then to USB
then I found there are two check boxes to enable the USB, the first is
already checked but the second is not, but there is no way to check It
because It's hidden.
You have to install the extensions to get VirtualBox to see a USB:
Licensing Information.
VirtualBox is released as *GPL*=> "Freely available for Windows,
Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris x-86 platforms."
VirtualBox Extension Pack => "*Free for Personal Use*, available
for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux and Solaris x-86 platforms.
( Extension Pack is required for USB 2 Access.)

Download this Prebuilt VirtualBox Appliance and import it:
http://wiki.sugarlabs.org/go/Sugar_Creation_Kit#Trisquel-5.0-sugar
I'm asking myself if I downloaded a wrong version
(trisquel-sugar_3.0-LATEST_i686) on this link
http://devel.trisquel.info/sugar/
Look at;

when I tried to download this trisquel-sugar_5 It showed me server
not found. which advice can you give me. I really want
to go deeper into that as soon as possible.
by the way can I find a small project that I can present as my final
year project in june?
thks

Hello Bender!
I managed to emulate XO laptop on my windows, it was a long process, thks
for ur help.
I tried it and it succeeded, so i'm going to emulate it for good.
Now I wanted to know how to bring the application sent by desire
Rwagaju(imageID.xo) in that XO,
so that i can start to edit It.
The easiest thing to do is to put the .XO file on a USB key, then
access the file from the Sugar Journal. It will then install in your
VM. You can edit the file using vi from Terminal, or download the
EditJam activity.

You need to download one of the VM images. See the link I sent you earlier.

VirtualBox should work (as should Sugar on a Stick, but that requires

Good luck.

Thank you for that great opportunity, we are really interested in

it

we
can start to learn it.
What is your usual system? Windows? Mac? Linux? Probably you will want
to use a VirtualBox environment. See

Thanks Walter,
can we work with GCompris V8.5BETA1?
We can start by its 4th part " Reading Activities",by editing its
games
"
drag and drop each item above its name" to use it to identify
different
mode
of transmission of HIV/AIDS& STDs.
I will meet CS students this Friday to give them XO laptops to start
interacting with it, for them to develop ideas.

Sounds like a plan. What I will try to do in the meantime is make a
stand-alone activity that does approximately the above that they can
use as a template.

Hello Walter,
I looked at different existing activities, to see which one would

more

Gcompris: http://activities.sugarlabs.org/en-US/sugar/addon/4313
Is

the choice. Please don't hesitate to suggest other activities we

I like your idea to make a collection of small activities that
together
constitute/covers this topic"Reproductive health, all its five
parts"
rather than
put everything into one Activity. We can start with the last part
(5.
Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV AIDS)? putting it into
different
parts
of that Gcompris or another existing activity you can recommend.
The problem with Gcompris is that it is a collection of about 100
activities... if there was a specific one you wanted to focus on
first...

Walter,
Thank you for your reply and your time to work directly with
local

I am proposing an interactive activity engaging students to
critically
think and reflect on their own ( health) and the community (kind
of
Gcompris
interactions)
This activity will have different parts:
Here attached the description of the fifth part of this Activity
called
"
KICK AIDS" (Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV AIDS) and I
will do
the
same to other remaining parts:
1. Human body (male and female)
2. Male and female reproductive systems
3. Reproductive organs hygiene
4. Family planning and contraceptives
5. Sexually transmitted diseases and HIV AIDS
Thanks a lot for your supportive answer.

It may make sense to develop a collection of small activities that
together constitute a curriculum of some sort, rather than trying
to
put everything into one uber-activity. Best to find some existing
activity that has some resemblance to what you want and modify it.
Let's start with some small piece of the puzzle to prove the idea.

Hello Walter, I hope new year finds you well,
Thank you. I hope 2012 is a great year for the children in
Rwanda.
My name is Rwagaju Desire, working on learning side of
OLPC-Rwanda
for
the
last three years. As part of our activities I've been working
with
teachers
and students in more than 120 primary schools and more than
100
000
students
(mostly P4-P6 grades) involved in OLPC project countrywide.
I've
been
influenced by my background in Health Science to notice a
strong
need
for
reproductive health education for students in primary schools
in
Rwanda
and
other developing countries. This kind of education is a key
factor
in
order
to reduce the high occurrence of early/unwanted pregnancies in
primary
students, as well as sexually transmitted diseases that are
easily
preventable by simply changing personal behaviors. This high
occurrence
is
due to lack of basic knowledge on reproductive health for
adolescent,
much
related to tradition, religion and customs of their parents,
that
not
allow
them to have conversation with their children about gender,
sex,
etc.
Taking the opportunity of deployment of laptops in Rwanda and
other
developing countries, to not only to engage students to seek
knowledge
related to curriculum but also to change their lives in
different
ways
that
can provide them well being I've written a small draft
describing
the development of an interactive activity for the XO that
could
help
students in early ages to learn about their reproductive
health.
The development of this activity will be a joint initiative
with
the
Rwandan
Ministry of Health, and OLPC Rwanda. It will involve students
in
Computer
Science from Kigali Institute of Science and Technology to
stimulate
local
developers for the sustainability of OLPC project.
Find Attached proposal for further details.
Wish you a prosperous 2012.
Regards
This is all great. The key is to figure out what the activity
will
actually do. Will it be some sort of interactive experience, or
something more like a brochure or pamphlet? I am happy to work
directly with the CS students in guiding them through the
process of
creating the activity itself.
Regards.

Attached is a simple activity that plays the GCompris game
(approximately) that I though would be easy for the kids to start
modifying. Please have them take a look. The key is the artwork in the
images directory and the game logic in game.py
