Yes but the English invented Soccer, Cricket and Rugby, the Greeks the Olympic games and a Frenchman the Modern Olympics and therefore modern athletics. All of these have truly global international competitions. Baseball is a bit of an anomally. I believe the first proper international World Cup classic involving national teams is due for 2006.
