Now here's a bit of news that will make Chad happy. Rumor has it that
Apple will sell x86 boxes with Mac OS X on them and Apple software:

Though I disagree with the content of the story (that this will hurt
Linux) this is still interesting. At least if they keep the price not
far from other x86 boxes. I've thought about Mac OS X, but never too
seriously because of (1) price of Apple hardware and (2) fewer choices
for Linux distros.
If Apple-x86 computers are comparable to other x86 computers, I might
buy one. Maybe for myself, maybe not. My brother is into media, and
all his favourite software runs on Macs; and he loves Macs.
Cheers,
Daniel.
While I appreciate you wanting to make me happy, I think you
misunderstand what Apple is doing.
Here's the official announcement.
http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/jun/06intel.html
What they are doing is making *Macs* with Intel processors - not the
same thing as making OS X work on exisiting Intel boxes. I think the
emulator that they refer to will only be used on these boxes. Now, it
is possible that the code will get leaked or hacked or something like
that - but from what I understand, legally, Mac OS X will still only
work on Macs, regardless of what processor they use.
I'm acually not sure how I feel about this move. I always thought that
Apple used the G series processors from IBM due to their performance
advantage over Intel/AMD....
With the Microsoft Xbox 360 running on a G5, and the next-gen of Apples
running on Intel, the world is on its head.
