Hhhmm... what I thought they were doing was making "Intel boxes" with
some small tweak so only they could run OS X. In ohter words, you'd
still have to buy the computer from Apple, but that same computer could
also run an off-the-shelf x86 Linux and Windows.
I was excited at the thought that my brother could have OS X and Windows
on the same computer. OS X for work and Windows for games.
I'm acually not sure how I feel about this move. I always thought that
Apple used the G series processors from IBM due to their performance
advantage over Intel/AMD....
I also thought there was some form of advantage that was good for Apple.
An x86 chip is "faster" over-all, but performs poorly on floating-point
operations (and maybe something else). So, which is faster in practice
depends on what you want to do with it (so I hear).
With the Microsoft Xbox 360 running on a G5, and the next-gen of Apples
running on Intel, the world is on its head.
Xbox will run on a G5? The world is indeed on its head...
Cheers,
Daniel.
