That is possibly a point of view. What one person calls a religion is called a
cult by another. Some people consider the TV evangelists to be part of a
religion, others consider them to be manipulating theives and con (wo)men.
Propecy in movies and novels is often religious, such as in dune. Since
George was based in SF mythology it's not surprising he went with the
religious mythology in star wars. Perhaps it evlved to an 'enlightened' and
scientific religion, but it's roots appear mystical in the star wars
universe.

Obviously I am an atheist, so from my outside perspective most religions and
cults look very similar. Also note that I am an atheist, not an anti-theist,
so I feel all religions have similar merit and I am not against any of them,
except maybe some of the TV evangelists. To my view, a belief in Zues or the
force is just as valid as a belief in the biblical god. I see little
difference between Hercules and Jesus in many ways. Some gods are not
worshipped these days, but they were worshipped by a large portion of the
world in the past. Or maybe just the names have changed since the adoption of
montheism (which possibly came out of egypt in their brief monotheistic phase
which loosely corrisponds to the time of 'moses')

Interesting stuff, religion, and so full of variety at times - yet
simularities. One common aspect is that 'my religion is the only one true
religion'.
