Saints are part of a known and established religion as far as I'm aware. They
may not be gods in themselves, but people pray to them.

Although some wish to call it a cult, the church of scientology is considered
a religion by a great many people apparently. At least according to google.

To me personally, all supernatural belief is very similar, yes. Some people
believe John Edward talks to dead people, some believe in voodoo, some
believe in a god of some description. I don't really make much distinction
between one supernatural belief system and another. I'm not sure John
Edwardism is a religion - yet. A simple belief may not be a religion, but a
belief system may be.
