Ok, we'll try and get a newer kernel working. I'll let you know how we
get on (might take a while though due to other issues to be resolved by
upgrading the kernel)!

I would use a latter kernel with the mcp251x driver built in. I'm
using 2.6.31, but even latter should be fine. We've gone weeks with
continuous operation without any issues.
