Yes, USB in FreeBSD has had some issues, but I'm happy to say that FreeBSD 8.0 has a completely new USB stack and it is vastly superior to the old one. I've recently installed 8.0-BETA1 on a net5501 and it is working wonderfully so far. Unfortunately I don't own a USB hub else I would test Graham's scenario.
