For what it's worth very few people use the mail list these days. I've been a subscriber for years and often see no more than a single post in a week. I think it's a case of too many other great responsive resources being available these days. This wasn't always the case, but these days it's popularity is definitely on the wane.
Although it must be said this does have it's advantages. Seeing as very few people unsubscribe, it's often the place that gets the fasted response to tricky questions.
