More weirdness. I tried another dataport and plugged it into another computer, and it booted fine... but when I plugged it into the non-working dataport, it didn't get past the IPv4 message. The computer with the rebuilt OS worked fine on the "broken" dataport, was even able to establish connectivity.

I hate computers, I really do. I should have been a carpenter.

P.S. And yes - in *nix world OS rebuild is definitely an overkill ;-)

In all the years (2 or so) that I've run *nix servers at home, I've had to do two OS rebuilds; both were cases of computers where the hard drive ended up being damaged beyond repair.
