Stoyan Have not work with ODM before, but are running Informix on raw devices, using Raid Manager 6.22 to create the devices and Veritas Volume Manager to create the raw 2GB segments. I would assume that ODM will handle the function of VVM.
Just a quick tip, when you create the database files, point them to symbolic link file names, thus if you have to recover a file, you can create it on any new raw device and just point the sym link to the new raw device. Just be careful if you do use bigger than 2 GB files, you might be limited to a few Unix utils that will be able to backup the raw devices. Might have changed in the latest versions of Solaris, but the old 2.6 and 7, does limit the utilities available. If I can give you good advice, yes raw is faster than cooked, but the admin overhead might not be worth if. If you play around with raid/striped and mirrored disks and split index tablespaces (raid/striped) from table tablespaces (raid/striped) and put your sequential accessed files on mirrored disk, redo-logs and archive logs, you might only loose 5-10% on the raw devices (and this is a thumb suck figure). For starting you have 2 ways to install oracle: on UFS patririon nad on RAW patririon 1st is very soft as a decision, but have lower speed (additional level of drivers) 2nd is fast, but you can't use sample tools to backup database as exp, tar, cpio, etc. if you need more info ask! <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> Regards: Romeo Ninov <><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><> >>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/14/03 04:44 >>> hello all, i am trying to find more information about Oracle ODM (oracle disk manager ?) since i want to find the best way to install oracle 9.2.0.1 database using solaris 8 (64-bit) on a sun e4500 and A5000 disk array. i have tried searching the net but could not find any information about ODM. can someone point me to links with information, documentation or maybe oracle best practices ? thank you for your time!
