I replaced my code with this and it works fine now:

        SortSpec sortSpec = builder.getSortSpec();
        if( sortSpec.getSort() == null ) {
          SchemaField sf = builder.req.getCore().getSchema()
            .getField( "somefield" );
          sortSpec.setSort( new Sort( new SortField[] {
              sf.getSortField( true )
          }));
        }
