You _should_ be able to use an HttpSolrServer, set
the base URL and then go ahead and make the
request. Haven't done it myself, but the SolrJ
"support" for various Solr features often consists of
just convenience methods over the underlying HTTP,
saving you the necessity of, say, parsing the response
yourself. So it _may_ just be that you need
to try that.

Like I said, I haven't tried it myself but...

Of course if you think this is general purpose enough,
feel free to make a JIRA and attach a patch!
