You are right, if the script is executed as user root, it needs access permission. However, I would prefer something like export DISPLAYUSER=`ps --no-heading -o user -C startkde` xauth add `sudo -u $DISPLAYUSER -s xauth list :0.0` over copying the whole .Xauthority file. But kde experts might even know better ways (e.g. like su does it in an X terminal...)
