The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has promised
support to the mobile team issuing national identification documents
to southerners in Khartoum.

The UNHCR's representative in South Sudan, Mireille Girard last week
said the support will be in form of basic equipment and facilitating
the mobile teams.

"You know that UNHCR has a mandate internationally to avoid the
situation of statelessness. In the context of the separation of South
Sudan and Sudan, there is a high risk that people will find themselves
in between two nationalities, having the nationality at the end
belonging to neither Sudan nor South Sudan.

"That's why we have been working very closely with both Sudan and
South Sudan governments to provide support to limit the risk of
statelessness".

She said the chosen areas include Northern and Western Bhar el Ghazal
states and Khartoum.

Girard said UNHCR will train the immigration department staff on
processing and issuance procedures of the national documents.

Last week, the UNHCR and South Sudan's directorate of nationality,
passport and immigration signed a memorandum of understanding to
support the issuance of nationality certificates and passports to the
citizens of the two Sudans living in either country.
