TORIT, 16 May 2012 (Gurtong) –The new Torit County Commissioner
William Oyet Omoro has told residents of Nyong Apayam that food
insecurity can only be addressed through enhanced production of food
crops.

“I appeal to everyone to seriously take to farming as it is the only
way we are going to tackle the biting hunger we are currently
experiencing. This is the right time and we should take advantage of
the rains”, he said.

He added that most people have neglected agriculture as one of the key
economic pillars despite the availability of fertile land.

Food shortage has been blamed for the high number of inter-communal
disputes across South Sudan, with communities scrambling for the scare
resources.

Officials have noted that sufficient food supplies would reduce
conflicts among South Sudanese communities.

Recently, the Eastern Equatoria State Governor Louis Lobong Lojore
issued an order allowing state government civil servants and
constitutional post holders to make use of every Friday to cultivate
their farms.
